The Cessna 210N aircraft, registered VH -JHF, was manufactured in 1980 and first registered in Australia in 1990. The airframe had accumulated 11,299 hours total time in service. The aircraft had been modified with the approved installation of a magnetometer system for conducting low-level geophysical surveys.
